Hop Ottin’ Wet Hop IPA

Made with the first harvest from our hop bines!

Brewer’s Notes

A simple IPA recipe from Clone Brews to try and draw attention to the home-grown hops. Picked the hops on Saturday and let dry in the garage for 24h. Had 8oz of wet hop, dried to about 4oz overnight. We did not expect any harvest, so this was a nice surprise.

Brew had a very large amount of solids. Fairly malty flavor considering we missed the target gravity. May be a bit over bittered. Tastes like Cascade – some orange, pine. Not dank. After allowing solids to settle overnight, resulted in a clear, light-amber beer. Grassy light hop aroma. Clean finish.

Fermenter target was 68F.

OG: 1.064 @ 83F, target 1.072
FG: 1.010 @ 70F, target 1.017

Fermenting Notes

The fermentation was very vigorous to start – had to clean the airlock once. It settled down after 2 days. Very high amount of yeast in suspension.

Added 1.5oz Cascade dry hop for 3 days. This caused the temperature drop with in the ferment graph.

Tasting Notes

10.28.18: Racked to keg, 14psi for a week. Final gravity is 1.010, which is much lower than expected. It has less body and more alcohol than expected, and tastes that way. Aroma is grassy, alcoholic. Color is dark straw, very cloudy

11.11.18: Beer is on tap and is drinking well. It is in general a good beer, does not have the grassy flavor I’m used to with a fresh-hopped beer, and is light in body. For an experiment with our hops, however, it was successful.
